  Basement stages a ten-minute walk north around JR Koenji — the neighbourhood Japanese punk calls home, with standing bars alongside. Entry is a ticket plus a compulsory door drink, usually cash; the record shops stocking the same music shut long before the bands start.

• Cheap and loud Koenji drinking lanes高円寺の飲み屋横丁

  Walk up Look shotengai from exit 2 and the arcades open into Koenji’s drinking streets — some of the cheapest honest drinking in Tokyo, a student-and-artist crowd, no dress code anywhere. Budget for otoshi. The old strip under the JR viaduct was cleared in spring 2026 for rebuilding.

No opening hours here — small bars keep their own, and many close without notice. Check before you set off, and ignore anyone on the street offering to take you somewhere.
