Two lanes of counter-only grills running beside the Yamanote tracks, grown from a 1946 black market — a minute from the west exit, and still thick with charcoal smoke. Cash is safest, and most counters add a small otoshi charge.

Some three hundred shoebox bars in six blocks of alleys, each with its own regulars and its own theme. Many welcome visitors; a few are members-only and the door will say so. Nearly all add a seat charge that is not always posted — ask the price before you sit. The lanes are private property, so ask before photographing.

Neon quarter Kabukicho歌舞伎町
Japan’s most famous wall of neon and its most heavily touted quarter — both chome are designated no-touting zones, where bars can be named publicly and fined for using scouts. Come for the lights, the arcades and the cinema towers. Whatever the pitch, don’t follow anyone who approaches you on the street: any bar admitting a tout-introduced customer is already breaking the rule, and a padded bill is the usual ending.
