Four companies worked one guardhouse in shifts 百人番所

Four musket companies — Koga, Iga, Negoro and Nijugoki — took day and night shifts at the Hyakunin-bansho, the guardhouse standing past Edo Castle's third gate, just before the Nakanomon leading to the main compound. Each company comprised twenty officers and a hundred men, and the building runs forty-five metres north to south.
